NEED TO CODIFY EXECUTIVE ORDER 5: Kabelmetal is advocating for a legal framework to back up Executive Order 5 that mandates government establishments to give preference to local companies in the award of contracts for goods and services. Kabelmetal as a member company of Manufacturers Local Content Group will like to see progress in the Nigerian Content bill currently stalled in the National Assembly. This bill will extent the coverage of the local content policy beyond Oil and Gas to other economic segments like Infrastructure and construction, Public Utilities, ICT, etc. This policy will encourage local businesses, grow GDP, reduce unemployment and retain in-country value.
We also advocate a statutory agency to oversee its implementation in the mold of NCDMB. Alternatively, NCDMB’s mandate can be expanded to cover the entire scope of the economy.
FACILITY VISIT IN LIEU OF NLNG TRAIN 7 PROJECT: The combined team of NCDMB/NLNG/the two bidding consortia for the NLNG Train 7 project; B7 JV and SCD JV paid a facility and audit inspection visit to Kabelmetal to verify its capacity for the upcoming project. The NLNG Train 7 project will be the most significant investment in the Oil & Gas industry since the Total Egina FPSO. It is estimated to increase the production capacity of the company from 22 million metric tons per annum to above 30 million metric tons per annum, situating Nigeria once again as a significant gas producer in the world.
NEW KABELMETAL OUTLET OPENS IN ALABA INTERNATIONAL MARKET: A new Distributor for Kabelmetal Cables has opened shop in Alaba International market. JONLIS Ventures (Kabelmetal Distributor) commenced retails operations at the ground floor A43, Century Mall, Ojo – Igbede Road, Alaba International Market.
KABELMETAL LAUNCHES SOLAR (PHOTOVOLTAIC) CABLES: In the continuous drive to improve its product offering in the Nigerian market, Kabelmetal has introduced cables for the sole application of solar generated electricity. This is in furtherance of our responsibility for greening of the environment for self-sustenance.
Nigeria Oil and Gas Opportunities Fair 2019: Kabelmetal recently participated in this event organized in Yenagoa by the NIGERIA CONTENT DEVELOPMENT AND MONITORING BOARD; where she showcased her capabilities, especially in Marine grade cables and Photovoltaic cables:
Nigeria Oil and Gas Fair: Kabelmetal will be participating in NOG 2019, Nigeria’s premier Oil and gas Exhibition and Conference. We shall be showcasing our competencies in cables for Oil and Gas application, especially Shipboard cables and Marine grade cables.
Kabelmetal Introduces new transporting and storage concept: If specified by the customer, we protect our cables on drums against sunlight and mechanical damage with a so-called planking:
However, we now offer a greener solution which conserves natural resources (wood), reduces transport weight and volume (planking on top of the drum flanges) and is much easier and faster to access the cable on the drum: Drum Cladding:
-
- Provides a water resistant and UV stable drum The cladding flushes between drum flanges without hollow space
- Improved drum  handling  efficiency  and  safety  for forklift and during unplanking (drum must be rolled)
- Reduced weight
- The cladding is shock resistant up to 100 kg/cm³
- The material is insect-proof and more hygienic than treated wood
- Re-usable to protect cable remanence on the drum
- Cladding made with help of recycling material
-
- Participation in ENI/AGIP Research and Development Exhibition/Conference: Kabelmetal was recently invited to participate in the above exhibition and conference in lieu of our pride of place as major suppliers of cables to the oil and gas industry.
- FOCUS ON QUALITY: TECHNO-COMMERCIAL DEPT (TCD)
Cable Technical Interpretation and Offers: The techno-commercial department handles the technical interpretation of customer requests relating same to the requirements of standards both national and international and Kabelmetal’s standards and then constructs and offers cables that meet the customer and regulatory requirements in cost effective ways that generate revenue for the Company. This is done by ensuring that requirements of standards are strictly adhered to and most times exceeded, in our constructions, bill of materials that remain competitive in the international cable market. Datasheets which are sectional drawings that show the technical details of cables are prepared and sent on customer request. Project Management and Documentation: In liaison with sales, production and quality control departments, TCD creates action plans, reviews and reports for projects that require such. This includes Compilation and submission of documentations mainly for the Oil and Gas business when required.
- Preventing Electrical Fire Occurrence in Buildings
A  major cause of building fire has been identified as fire emanating from electrical installations as a result of the quality of electrical equipment or wiring cables used in the construction of such building. It is a known fact that the Nigerian energy market have consistently being flooded with fake cables which tends to be cheaper in comparison to the quality ones but the effect at the end of the day is usually more damaging than the perceived cost saving made during procurement stages in a building construction. During fire emergency in a building, the basic reactions are; how to stop or reduce as much as possible it’s propagation and extinguish it and how to  evacuate inhabitants safely. Fires are not the primary causative factors in casualties; rather it is the inhalation of toxic gases and thick smoke produced during the outbreak. This is as a result of the nature of insulation material used for the cable manufacture. A polyvinyl chloride (PVC) contains halogen which can cause the emission of heavy black smoke, hydrochloric acid, as well as some other toxic gases when it burns. Therefore during a fire disaster, a burning PVC cable releases hydrogen chloride, a poisonous gas that forms hydrochloric acid when it comes in contact with water. This poisonous gas and thick smoke is usually what most victims of fire disaster inhales, killing them even before the actual fire gets to them. The corrosive smoke produced will also diminish the integrity of the structure (weakens the building) and that is why most of such building gets marked for demolition afterwards. A quality PVC cable will not cause fire because it has the capacity to withstand the rated voltage it was made for whilst the substandard cable cannot hence it produces heat which could get to the flash point of the insulation to produce flame (fire). A Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) cable serve as an alternative to the PVC cable due to its flame-resistant nature, this means that there will not emit toxic fumes even if it burns through external means. It reduces the amount of dangerous/poisonous gases in case of fire. It has the following advantages over a PVC cable;
- It reduces available organic fuel load.
- A protective char layer is formed which makes it impossible for fire propagation.
- It generates less smoke even if it burns (via external source) allowing for safe evacuation of inhabitants and fire suppression.
- It has the potential for less secondary equipment damage usually caused by corrosive smoke.
Today virtually all medium and large installations in Europe consider Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) cables especially for Confined spaces with high cable density and human inhabitants or sensitive equipment e.g. Public Transit, Central Offices / Data Centers. And also for public areas like; Arenas, shopping malls, houses of worship etc. They are best installed where the environment is well ventilated i.e. in Cable trays or a building with plenum.
